Gary Neville and Roy Keane Predict Different Outcomes for Crystal Palace vs. Liverpool Clash
Gary Neville and Roy Keane have offered differing predictions ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash between Crystal Palace and Liverpool.
The two sides are set to face each other once again, following their recent encounter in the Community Shield.
Liverpool will aim to continue its perfect start to the season when it travels to Selhurst Park, with Arne Slot going head-to-head with Oliver Glasner for the second time in a short span.
In their previous meeting at Wembley, Crystal Palace held Liverpool to a draw and triumphed in the penalty shootout. Now, the Reds will be looking for payback with a victory away from home.
On the Stick to Football podcast, presented by Sky Bet, the pundits couldn’t agree on how the match might go. Roy Keane predicted a 2-1 win for Liverpool, while both Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville tipped the match to end in a 1-1 draw.
While many fans may remember Liverpool’s dramatic 3-3 draw at Selhurst Park in 2014, the Merseyside club actually boasts a strong recent record in south London. Liverpool hasn’t lost an away match to Palace since November 2014, winning all but one fixture at Selhurst Park since then.
In fact, the Reds secured a thumping 7-0 win there in 2020. Ironically, they’ve had more difficulty facing Palace at Anfield in recent seasons.
Liverpool’s last home win over Crystal Palace came in September 2021. Since then, they’ve drawn 1-1 twice and lost 1-0. The most recent meeting at Selhurst Park saw Diogo Jota score the only goal in a narrow Liverpool victory.
Meanwhile, Crystal Palace will be without Hugo Ekitike, who is suspended after being sent off against Southampton earlier in the week. The forward picked up a second yellow card for removing his shirt during a goal celebration.
Reflecting on the incident, Ekitike posted on Instagram:
“I was so excited tonight to help the team achieve another victory here at home in my first Carabao Cup match.
The emotion got the better of me. My apologies to all the Red family. Thanks to the fans who always support us and to my teammates for securing the victory!”
After the match, Liverpool boss Arne Slot expressed mixed feelings:
“There were many things I would have preferred to see done differently,” he said. “First, we need to assess Giovanni Leoni’s injury.
Then there’s the unnecessary—perhaps even stupid—second yellow card that led to a suspension. And we conceded a goal that really wasn’t the kind you want to see.”
