Iraola Highlights Leeds’ Physical Edge and Calvert-Lewin’s Impact in Hard-Fought Draw
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has praised Leeds United’s intensity following their dramatic 2-2 draw on Saturday, singling out one Leeds player for his standout performance.
Leeds were left to rue another late goal as a 93rd-minute equaliser from Eli Kroupi denied them a crucial Premier League victory.
Despite the disappointment, Daniel Farke’s side delivered a spirited performance, recovering from Antoine Semenyo’s opener to go ahead at Elland Road.
Joe Rodon brought Leeds level with a commanding header before Sean Longstaff produced a stunning outside-of-the-boot strike to give the hosts the lead.
Leeds held firm for much of the second half, but their resistance was eventually broken in stoppage time, turning a potential win into a single point.
While frustrating, the draw against a high-flying Bournemouth side was still a positive result—and Iraola was quick to acknowledge the quality of Leeds’ performance.
Speaking after the match, Iraola reflected on the intensity of the contest and highlighted Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s role in making life difficult for his team.

“It was a very physical game,” said Iraola. “Calvert-Lewin won a lot of the first contacts. Their midfield was strong in duels and second balls. Normally, we’re good in those battles, but Leeds were better today. It was a difficult game for us.”
He went on to describe a stretch of the match where Bournemouth lost control: “Once they equalised, and from that point until they made it 2-1, we really struggled.
You could feel their goal coming before ours. We pushed them back late on and created some chances, but none were really clear—they defended with numbers and commitment.”
Strong Display from Calvert-Lewin, But Goals Still Missing
Dominic Calvert-Lewin put in a tireless shift up front and was a constant threat, justifying Iraola’s praise.
He frequently beat defenders to loose balls, held up play effectively, and helped bring others into the game with smart movement and link-up play. His work rate was undeniable—but one key piece was missing: a goal.
Calvert-Lewin had several chances, starting with a golden opportunity inside the first 20 seconds. He also saw a close-range effort saved and later missed a free header from a central position. Despite his all-round contribution, he failed to convert any of those openings.
For a team battling near the bottom of the table, converting such chances is vital. Leeds need their striker to start finishing off the chances he works so hard to create—or they risk continuing to drop valuable points.
