Sunderland continued their promising start to the Premier League season with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday. Kevin Phillips believes the Black Cats have now put themselves in an “incredible” position to fight for Premier League survival.

Omar Alderete scored the decisive goal in the first half, lifting Sunderland to third in the table ahead of Sunday’s matches. Speaking as a pundit for Sky Sports, Phillips praised manager Régis Le Bris for quickly uniting a newly overhauled squad. He also singled out Granit Xhaka as an “inspirational” addition to the team.

“Desire, resilience—everything you need to win football matches,” said Phillips. “To go to Nottingham Forest, especially with it being Ange Postecoglou’s first home game, and deliver a performance like that… They took their chance and showed real character. Phillips emphasized how effectively Sunderland addressed key areas in the summer transfer window and credited Le Bris for swiftly implementing his philosophy.

“They knew what they needed, went out and got the right players, and that deserves real praise,” he added. “To do that and perform like this in the best league in the world—it’s a huge credit to him and his staff.”

Phillips reserved special praise for Xhaka, naming him man of the match: “He’s been an inspirational signing. Whoever made that deal happen deserves huge credit. Former Sunderland and Forest midfielder Andy Reid felt the home side would be disappointed not to have taken something from the match. Both he and Phillips agreed that the free kick leading to Sunderland’s goal—given after Nicolas Dominguez was booked—was a harsh decision.

“It’ll be a tough one to swallow,” Reid said. “Forest dominated much of the game and had the better chances, especially in the second half. They’ll feel they should have at least drawn, if not won, and losing due to a questionable refereeing call will sting.”

“It was the most natural decision—left-back for left-back,” Le Bris explained. “Arthur did well.
