Summerville Reflects on Arsenal Defeat as Nuno’s West Ham Focuses on Positives

Crysencio Summerville didn’t sound like a player disheartened by West Ham United’s 2-0 loss to Arsenal — Nuno Espirito Santo’s first defeat as manager. Despite the Hammers struggling for possession and failing to register a single shot on target, the winger echoed his manager’s message of encouragement.

West Ham had just 31% of the ball at the Emirates and offered little going forward. Still, Nuno’s influence was visible, particularly in defence.

Konstantinos Mavropanos kept Viktor Gyokeres quiet, Max Kilman continued his solid form from the Everton match, and Alphonse Areola remained commanding in goal. Despite Arsenal taking over 20 shots, Areola was only forced into three saves. The Gunners, even with Gabriel Magalhães back, were unable to exploit West Ham from set-pieces — a weakness that has plagued the team this season.

Summerville and Jarrod Bowen were largely tasked with defensive duties on the flanks, a role they took seriously. The Dutch winger acknowledged the challenge but maintained that there were positives to build on.

“I think we did quite well in the first half,” Summerville told BBC Sport. “We managed to slow them down at times, but against a team like this, it’s always difficult. In the second half, they overran us a bit, but we have to take the positives and keep going after the break.”

He also shared Nuno’s post-match message:

“He said we have to take the positives. We knew it would be tough. There’s work to do after the international break.”

Nuno will manage his first game at the London Stadium on October 20th against Brentford. Although he’s still looking for his first win, the signs of progress are evident. Few would have predicted West Ham taking a point at Everton and limiting Arsenal to two goals on their home turf.

Summerville also reflected on his own performance:

“We knew we wouldn’t have the ball much, so when I did get it, I tried to bring something extra. I’m not too happy with myself today — I need to work on a few things. But I think we have a lot to offer, especially under this coach. He wants us to attack, and that suits me.”

Nuno, meanwhile, acknowledged the challenges but took pride in his team’s effort.

“We’ve had two tough games away against very strong teams,” he said. “Now is the time to analyse. There have been a lot of changes, but the players are responding. That’s what pleases me most.”

He emphasized the value of the upcoming international break — both to reset mentally and to strengthen team unity:

“It’s been a difficult few weeks for the players. Discipline, organisation, resilience — these are the basics. The attitude was there today. We made some mistakes, yes, but the boys worked hard and kept fighting. That’s our starting point.”
