Steven Gerrard is reportedly set for face-to-face discussions with Rangers officials in London today about potentially replacing Russell Martin as manager, according to GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs.
The 45-year-old former Rangers boss is among the frontrunners to return to Ibrox after Martin’s dismissal on Sunday. Gerrard is said to be open to a comeback, nearly four years after leaving the club to manage Aston Villa in the Premier League.
While Gerrard is a leading contender, Rangers are expected to speak with several candidates before making a final decision. Early talks with the former captain of Liverpool and England have reportedly been positive.
Out of management since departing Saudi side Al-Ettifaq in January, Gerrard was also considered for the Rangers job prior to Martin’s appointment in June.
Gerrard previously spent over three years at Rangers after joining in 2018, guiding the club to its first Premiership title in a decade during the 2020/21 season.
During his time in Glasgow, he won 124 of his 192 matches—an average of 2.15 points per game—before leaving for Aston Villa in November 2021.
At Villa, Gerrard led the team to a 14th-place finish in his first season but was dismissed early in the following campaign after managing just three wins in 11 league fixtures.
In 2023, he took over at Al-Ettifaq, finishing sixth in the Saudi Pro League in his first season. However, he left by mutual consent in January with the team sitting 12th, five points clear of relegation.
Martin’s short stint at Rangers yielded only five wins from 17 matches. His final game—a 1-1 draw at Falkirk on Sunday—came after consecutive Europa League defeats to Genk and Midtjylland.
The 38-year-old had only been in charge since July, having signed a three-year contract.
