During Everton’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool, referee Darren England came under fire for his handling of several key moments. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was controversially booked for taking a quick free-kick, and the official also overlooked a clear foul in the buildup to Liverpool’s opening goal.
Dewsbury-Hall, in particular, has faced a string of contentious calls since joining Everton. He missed the match against Crystal Palace after being suspended for a yellow card he received for what appeared to be a clean tackle against West Ham.
Tony Harrington appointed for Manchester City vs Everton
The Premier League has confirmed that Tony Harrington will officiate Everton’s upcoming fixture against Manchester City on Saturday. Nick Hopton will serve as VAR, with Constantine Hatzidakis acting as assistant VAR.
Harrington has taken charge of eight Everton matches so far, with the Toffees winning four, losing two (to Nottingham Forest last season and Newcastle United in 2022–23), and drawing the rest. However, there’s one statistic in his record that may concern Moyes.
Everton’s booking troubles under Harrington
Everton have received more yellow cards under Harrington than any other team he has refereed. Across those eight matches, the Toffees have been shown 24 yellow cards — averaging three per game. The next closest side, QPR, have averaged two yellow cards per match across 19 games with the same referee.
Despite this, Harrington has yet to send off an Everton player or award a red card in their fixtures, and he has given just one penalty.
With several Everton players already nearing suspension due to accumulated bookings, Harrington’s appointment is likely to add to Moyes’s concerns ahead of their trip to the Etihad.
