Barry Ferguson has described Rangers-linked Kevin Muscat as a “natural-born winner.”

The Ibrox board are reportedly close to finalising an agreement to appoint Muscat as the club’s new head coach.

Ferguson, who took interim charge of Rangers at the end of last season, shared his thoughts on the potential appointment.

“I got to know Kevin really well during his playing days at Rangers — we used to travel to training together every day,” he told Record Sport. “He’s a natural-born winner.

“He already understands what makes Rangers special — it’s in his DNA. He’ll make sure he’s surrounded by people who share that same mentality.

“I’ve always followed his career closely. He’s been successful everywhere he’s managed, apart from a short stint in Belgium that didn’t go to plan. But he bounced back from that to win titles in Japan and China, which says a lot about his character and resilience.”

Muscat is expected to see out the remainder of the season with Shanghai Port in the Chinese Super League before any move to Scotland. The club’s final league fixture is on November 22.

That means Muscat could miss eight key Rangers matches in the meantime, with Under-19s coach Stevie Smith set to take charge for this weekend’s home clash against Dundee United.
