David Prutton Tips Leicester City to Edge Portsmouth Clash
Sky Sports pundit David Prutton believes Leicester City have the quality needed to overcome Portsmouth when the two sides meet this weekend.
The Foxes return to Championship action on Saturday evening after a positive run before the international break. Leicester defeated Swansea City 3-1 in their last outing, with goals from Jordan James, Abdul Fatawu, and Jannik Vestergaard sealing the win.
Marti Cifuentes’ side currently sit third in the table after nine games, behind Coventry City and Middlesbrough, and are firmly in the play-off positions alongside Preston North End, Stoke City, and QPR.
Prutton’s Verdict
Speaking to Sky Sports, former midfielder David Prutton praised both clubs but expects Leicester to come out on top:
“Leicester clearly have aspirations of bouncing straight back to the Premier League, and that win against Swansea – coming after a run of draws – shows what they’re capable of.
Both sides had good victories heading into the international break. I’m a big fan of John Mousinho and what he’s done at Portsmouth. His first priority is consolidation and building on their progress.
They’re a big, proud, noisy club who always travel well, so it’ll be a cracking game. But I think Leicester have the quality to edge this one. I’ll go 2-1.”
Leicester’s Promotion Ambition
Leicester appointed Marti Cifuentes as head coach over the summer following Ruud van Nistelrooy’s departure. The Spaniard joined from QPR, bringing a fresh tactical approach as the Foxes aim for an immediate return to the Premier League.
The club made several changes to their squad during the transfer window, parting with Mads Hermansen, James Justin, and Kasey McAteer to balance finances and create space for new arrivals. Cifuentes strengthened the team with signings such as James, Julian Carranza, and Aaron Ramsey.
Leicester have adapted quickly to life back in the Championship and remain within touching distance of the automatic promotion spots. Their recent win over Swansea highlighted growing confidence and momentum.
Building Momentum
Unbeaten in their last seven matches, Leicester have become one of the toughest teams to beat in the division. With attacking threats across the pitch, they’ll be confident of maintaining their run of form against Portsmouth.
Pompey, meanwhile, were promoted from League One in 2024 and have made solid progress under John Mousinho. They finished comfortably mid-table last season and currently sit 14th, just three points outside the top six.
