Enzo Maresca Unsure Over Marc Guiu’s Potential January Return to Sunderland
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has admitted it’s “very difficult to say” whether Marc Guiu will rejoin Sunderland on loan when the January transfer window opens.
Chelsea host Sunderland at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, aiming to extend their winning streak to five games in all competitions.
The Black Cats have enjoyed a fantastic start to the season and currently sit level on points with Chelsea after eight matches — a remarkable feat for a newly promoted side.
Maresca Discusses Marc Guiu’s Situation
This weekend’s fixture will be a special one for Guiu, who could face Sunderland for the first time since his short-lived loan spell there earlier in the season.
The young striker joined Sunderland on a season-long loan during the summer, but Chelsea recalled him at the end of August after Liam Delap suffered a hamstring injury.
Guiu initially struggled for playing time upon his return, but he has since broken into the team — featuring in Chelsea’s last three matches, including a notable appearance against Liverpool.
Maresca previously explained that Guiu’s limited minutes were due to his training performances, but recent improvements have seen him earn more opportunities. With that progress, rumors have emerged suggesting a possible return to Sunderland.
Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has already addressed the speculation, and now Maresca has shared his own thoughts.
“We are in October — I don’t know. In football, things can change very quickly for everyone: for players, for managers, for clubs,” Maresca said in his pre-match press conference. “So it’s very difficult to say right now.”
Delap Nears Return from Injury
Meanwhile, Liam Delap returned to training on Thursday for the first time since picking up his hamstring injury in August. Although he won’t feature against Sunderland, Maresca confirmed there’s a strong chance the England Under-21 forward could be available next week.
Delap’s recovery comes as a major boost for Chelsea ahead of a crucial stretch of fixtures.
