Danny Rohl’s Rangers Tenure Starts with a Nightmare Defeat

Danny Rohl’s first match in charge of Rangers could hardly have gone worse. The Ibrox side suffered a heavy 3–0 loss to Norwegian outfit Brann, leaving them rooted to the bottom of their Europa League group.

Rohl, appointed on Monday as Russell Martin’s successor, endured a difficult start to life in the dugout as his team turned in a flat and uninspired performance in Bergen.

Goals from Emil Kornvig, Jacob Lungi Sørensen, and Noah Holm sealed a comfortable victory for the hosts and highlighted the scale of the task facing the new manager.

Rangers’ defensive line struggled throughout the match, offering little resistance, while the attack was equally ineffective. Youssef Chermiti, once again, failed to make an impact.

The 21-year-old forward, still searching for his first goal in Rangers colours, squandered another chance to break his drought on Thursday night—something that will no doubt give Rohl a selection dilemma ahead of the weekend fixture.

Why Rohl Must Drop Youssef Chermiti

Chermiti, who joined Rangers from Everton in September for £10 million, has so far failed to live up to expectations.

Across eight appearances this season, including three in the Europa League, he has yet to register a goal or an assist.

Given another opportunity to prove himself against Brann, the Portuguese striker once more disappointed.

Early in the game, he wasted a promising chance from Joe Rothwell’s cross, directing a tame header straight at the goalkeeper—the only real moment he looked likely to score.

Following the match, BBC Sport Scotland’s Tom English was scathing in his assessment, commenting:

“This must have been one of the first red flags for Rohl. It wasn’t just that Chermiti didn’t score—it’s that he never looked like scoring.”

English went on to suggest that the forward embodies Rangers’ current issues, highlighting poor decision-making and misguided recruitment that has weakened, rather than strengthened, the team.

Rohl’s decision to start Chermiti now appears to have backfired, and it seems inevitable that the striker will be dropped for Saturday’s Premiership clash with Kilmarnock.

Fortunately, the German coach has alternatives. Both Bojan Miovski and Danilo are available and eager to impress, having managed only three goals between them so far this season.
