Maresca Frustrated After Chelsea’s Shock Defeat to Sunderland
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has voiced his frustration following his team’s surprise 2–1 defeat to Sunderland at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The Blues had taken an early lead but conceded a last-gasp winner in the 93rd minute, allowing Sunderland to leapfrog them in the Premier League table.
Maresca left the pitch visibly annoyed after what he described as a flat performance from his side. The loss came as a major setback for Chelsea, who had previously enjoyed a run of four straight wins across all competitions.
Clarke Embraces ‘Super-Sub’ Tag at Ipswich
Over in the Championship, Jack Clarke has made an impressive start to the 2025/26 season with Ipswich Town, albeit in an unconventional way. The winger has featured in 11 league games, starting only five, yet he has scored five goals — with four of them coming off the bench. His latest decisive strike came in a 1–0 victory over West Bromwich Albion.
The 24-year-old has earned a reputation as a “super-sub,” a label he accepts with good humor.
“Of course, everyone wants to start games and make an impact, but it’s not the worst tag to have,” Clarke laughed. “I’ve had worse! We’ve got a really strong squad, and the manager picks the team he thinks gives us the best chance to win.”
Clarke also admitted that coming off the bench can sometimes be an advantage:
“When the game opens up, it can be easier to find space and chances. Obviously, everyone wants to start, but we all have a role to play.”
His goal against West Brom proved decisive after he combined with fellow substitutes Jens Cajuste and Ivan Azon — Cajuste winning the ball, Azon forcing a save, and Clarke calmly finishing the rebound.
Reflecting on the win, Clarke said it came at the perfect time:
“It was a massive result for us after the week we’d had. The boss always tells us not to get too focused on the table because it can change so quickly in this league. We knew we hadn’t been at our best recently, but this was about staying in the game and taking our chance.”
Following a 3–0 home defeat to Charlton Athletic earlier in the week, Clarke admitted there was added pressure to respond:
“Probably, yes. We know we can do better. We’re not perfect, but we’re working towards playing the kind of football fans want to see.”
Despite his recent scoring streak, Clarke insists he’s not chasing personal glory:
“It’s not about who scores. It’s about results and momentum. You just try to be in the right place at the right time and stay composed.”
Ipswich climbed the table ahead of Saturday’s 3pm kick-offs and still have a game in hand on the teams above them. Clarke remains confident the best is yet to come:
“Honestly, I’m not even sure where we are in the table,” he smiled. “But we know we can be better. We’ve let a few points slip, like Tuesday night. If we keep performing and getting results, everything will come together.”
