James Tavernier Silences Critics with Standout Display Against Kilmarnock

Rangers right-back and captain James Tavernier answered his critics in style with a commanding performance in his side’s 3-1 victory over Kilmarnock.

It’s been a turbulent season for the Glasgow giants, far from what supporters envisioned when the campaign began. The club’s new ownership appointed Russell Martin as manager, but his tenure lasted just 123 days—making him the shortest-serving boss in Rangers history.

After a period of searching, the Ibrox hierarchy turned to German coach Danny Rohl as Martin’s successor. Rohl, who impressed during his two-year spell at Sheffield Wednesday by keeping the club in the Championship against the odds, is regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young managers.

Although his reign began with a Europa League defeat to Brann, Rohl’s first Premiership match brought a much-needed win. Rangers defeated Kilmarnock 3-1, and one man in particular used the occasion to remind fans of his quality—James Tavernier.

Tavernier’s Response

Deployed on the right side of a back three at Ibrox, Tavernier looked rejuvenated. Now in his tenth season with Rangers, the Bradford-born defender has long been a pivotal figure for the club, known for his remarkable attacking contributions from defence.

However, as reported by the Daily Record, the 33-year-old has come under scrutiny in recent months for inconsistent performances, becoming something of a scapegoat amid the team’s broader struggles.

Against Kilmarnock, though, Tavernier was back to his influential best. He provided the assist for Derek Cornelius’s opener—his first assist of the season—and once again demonstrated why he remains one of Rangers’ most important players.

Despite the criticism, he has already scored four Premiership goals this term, more than any of his teammates.

Tavernier earned an 8/10 rating from Glasgow World for his display, and if he can maintain this level under Rohl’s leadership, it could prove vital as Rangers aim to climb the table and rediscover their best form under their new manager.
