Celtic Trail Hearts by Eight Points After Costly Defeat at Tynecastle

Former Rangers star Neil McCann has branded some of Brendan Rodgers’ recent comments as “puzzling” and described the Celtic manager’s remarks about Hearts as “disrespectful.”

Rodgers is facing mounting pressure to turn Celtic’s season around. His side currently sit second in the Scottish Premiership, eight points adrift of leaders Hearts following a 3–1 defeat at Tynecastle last weekend. They were also knocked out of the Champions League at the play-off stage, and questions are growing over both the club’s transfer policy and the team’s dip in form.

After the loss to Hearts, Rodgers claimed his players “had to deal with a lot of direct balls,” drawing a contrast between Celtic’s and Hearts’ playing styles — a comment McCann took exception to.

Neil McCann Criticises Rodgers’ “Disrespectful” Remarks

Speaking on Sportscene, McCann — who played for both Rangers and Hearts — said:

“I thought it was quite disrespectful, not only to Hearts as a club, but to the current team and Derek McInnes’ group.

Brendan’s said a few things lately that have puzzled me. I’m not sure what he’s thinking, but that comment in particular was disrespectful.”

McCann went on to highlight Hearts’ impressive form:

“You look at Hearts’ 22 goals compared to Celtic’s 12 — that’s a difference of 10, with a positive goal difference 14 better than Celtic right now. That’s not a team playing ‘hoof ball.’

There’s no single right way to play football; it’s up to the manager and what the fans enjoy, as long as you’re winning. Hearts have done that, they’re eight points clear, and that’s a fantastic achievement.”

Celtic Need a Strong Response

Rodgers, who enjoyed major success during both of his spells at Celtic, now finds himself under heavy scrutiny as he looks to steady the ship and get the title race back on track.

Celtic will host newly-promoted Falkirk in a crucial midweek fixture — and anything less than a win will only intensify the pressure on the manager and his squad.

The Hoops also have the League Cup to defend, with a showdown against Rangers and new boss Danny Rohl set for Sunday, November 9 — the first meeting between the two sides since Russell Martin’s departure.
