George Hirst Demands More From Himself Despite Brace in Ipswich’s 4–1 Win at QPR

George Hirst netted twice in Ipswich Town’s 4–1 win over Queens Park Rangers, taking his tally to five for the season — but the striker insists he should have scored more by now.

Hirst was one of two players to grab a brace at Loftus Road, with Marcelino Núñez also finding the net twice from two superb free-kicks.

The 26-year-old opened the scoring after just 68 seconds with a close-range header and added his second in the second half in front of the travelling support.

“It should be more — I’ll be the first to admit that,” Hirst said after the game. “That’s just life as a striker. Sometimes they go in, sometimes they don’t. But I’ll always take responsibility — it’s down to me to put the ball in the net.”

Despite his self-criticism, Hirst remains confident in his form and mindset.

“If I wasn’t getting chances, I’d be more worried,” he added. “You might go a few games without scoring, but if you keep doing the right things in training and on matchdays, the goals will come.”

Hirst has taken three penalties this season, missing two — one saved at Middlesbrough and another in a Carabao Cup shootout against Bromley. Still, he refuses to let missed opportunities dent his confidence.

“I’ve got great players around me, some of the best in the league. My job is to keep getting into the right positions, stay calm, and take my chances,” he said.

“You can’t let a miss get to you. I’m my own harshest critic, but I’m learning to move on quickly — next chance, next goal.”

Hirst also praised teenage teammate Sindre Walle Egeli, who set up his opener with a pinpoint cross after breaking down the right flank.

“He’s incredible,” Hirst said. “He’s got a brilliant left foot and a strong right one too, as you saw with the cross. He’s got a huge future if he keeps his head down and keeps working. I’ll make sure I’m on him every day to help him improve.”

The victory — Ipswich’s first away win of the season — lifted Kieran McKenna’s side to ninth in the Championship table after 12 matches.

When asked about the possibility of breaking into the top six, Hirst was quick to downplay expectations.

“That’s not something we’re focused on,” he said. “It’s about performances and results. We’ve got a lot of new signings, so it’s taking a bit of time to gel, but we’re improving every week. If we keep working hard, the wins will follow.”
