Ally McCoist slams Rangers vs Celtic officials controversy

Ally McCoist has slammed the officials for failing to send off Auston Trusty after what he described as a “head-high, dangerous challenge” on Jack Butland — calling it “one of the worst decisions” he’s ever witnessed.

The controversial moment occurred during the fiery League Cup semi-final clash between Rangers and Celtic.
During the incident, Celtic defender Trusty and Rangers goalkeeper Butland both challenged for a loose ball, but Butland clearly got there first. Despite that, Trusty’s raised boot struck the keeper in the head — yet no red card was shown.

McCoist fumed:

“Remarkably, the referee didn’t send off the Celtic centre-half (Trusty) for kicking the Rangers goalkeeper in the head. It was one of the worst decisions I’ve seen in a long time — and then VAR didn’t act either.”

The flashpoint came in a high-intensity first half that saw Celtic take the lead and Rangers reduced to ten men after Thelo Aasgaard’s rash tackle on Anthony Ralston.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, McCoist reflected:

“It was a much better game — full of goals, drama, and incidents I could moan about all day. Celtic dominated the first half; Rangers were really poor. But the sending-off changed the game — Rangers were miles better afterward. I don’t think Aasgaard meant it, but it was a poor challenge and the right call.”

He continued:

“The match swung back and forth. Rangers got a late penalty — there was some debate, but I thought it was the correct decision. Overall, it was a cracking game, really enjoyable to watch. The result didn’t go our way, which was disappointing, but at least it was a far better contest this time.”
