Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is preparing for an emotional reunion as he faces Sunderland — his boyhood club — for the first time on Monday evening.

The 31-year-old came through Sunderland’s academy ranks, making 35 senior appearances for the Black Cats before earning a move to Everton in 2017. Now, for the first time since leaving Wearside, he’ll return to the Stadium of Light as an opponent when the Blues take on Sunderland on 3 November.

“I’ve always wanted to go back to the Stadium of Light and to have this opportunity is amazing,” he said. “Sunderland have done so well to get back into the Premier League after so many years away.

“I’m praying I get a good reception — I think I will. They know how passionate I am and that I’m a Sunderland lad through and through.

“It’ll be strange walking down those stairs again, but I’ll stay focused and do things properly. For me and my family, it’ll be an incredible experience — especially for my son Arlo. He supports Everton, Sunderland and England, so it’ll be special for him too.

“Of course, I’ll be giving my all for Everton — but don’t worry, I won’t celebrate if we score or win.”

The match will mark the first time Pickford faces Sunderland since their last meeting with Everton in the 2017 League Cup, a game that came before his transfer to Merseyside.

Pickford’s long-term future with Everton

The England number one recently signed a new long-term deal at Goodison Park, extending his stay until June 2029. By then, he’ll be 35 and could be nearing the end of an illustrious career that’s already seen him make over 320 appearances for Everton and earn 80 England caps.

Pickford’s commitment to the club reflects his faith in Everton’s direction under David Moyes, with the Toffees also working to secure new deals for James Garner and Vitalii Mykolenko.
