Norwich City issued Russell Martin warning amid Liam Manning replacement links

Norwich City are reportedly eyeing Russell Martin as a possible replacement for under-pressure manager Liam Manning, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The Canaries have placed the 39-year-old on their shortlist in case the club decides to make a managerial change following a poor start to the season.

Manning, who only took charge in the summer, has endured a nightmare spell so far — with just two wins from 13 matches and six straight defeats, leaving Norwich languishing near the bottom of the table with only eight points.

Martin, currently out of work after being sacked by Rangers earlier this season, is a familiar name at Carrow Road.

The former defender spent eight years at Norwich as a player, making over 300 appearances and cementing his status as a fan favourite.

⚠️ Norwich Fans Divided Over Possible Martin Return

Speaking to Football League World, Norwich supporter and pundit Zeke Downes urged caution over the club legend’s potential return, warning that sentiment should not outweigh substance.

“I can see why Martin would want to join us, and I can see why the link makes sense,” Downes said.
“It’s a feelgood story — having a club legend come back — but there are questions about what he’s actually achieved.”

Downes pointed out that while Martin did a decent job at Swansea and managed to guide Southampton to promotion through the play-offs, his stint at Rangers ended disastrously.

“He didn’t exactly overachieve at Southampton — it was a strong squad. And his time at Rangers was really poor,” he added.
“So there’s definitely going to be some hesitation among fans.”

💬 “Any Change Would Please Fans Right Now”

Despite his reservations, Downes admitted that most Norwich supporters would welcome a change in the dugout given the current crisis.

“At this point, most fans would just be happy to see a change,” he said.
“But this next appointment has to be the right one — we’ve made too many bad calls recently. This might be our last chance to save the season and avoid relegation.”

📉 Norwich’s Dire Form Continues

Norwich’s form under Manning has been dismal. Their last win came on August 30th against Blackburn Rovers, and they have yet to secure a home victory this season.

Frustration among supporters is growing rapidly, with the team’s next fixture — a relegation battle against Sheffield Wednesday on November 5th — already being described as make-or-break.

🔍 Would Martin Be the Right Fit?

While Martin’s managerial reputation has taken a hit following his short-lived spell at Rangers, his prior Championship experience with Swansea and Southampton could make him a suitable candidate.

Norwich need stability and results — something Manning has been unable to deliver so far.

Still, appointing Martin would be a gamble. His connection to the club may spark optimism, but as Norwich’s recent history shows, sentiment alone won’t fix their problems.
