“Indispensable” Leeds Star Now Struggling for Form

Leeds United’s young prospect Alex Baird could be set to leave West Yorkshire when the January transfer window opens.

After earning promotion back to the Premier League last season under Daniel Farke, the Whites have been working hard to strengthen their squad and avoid the fate of recent promoted teams who failed to survive. Leeds made several additions over the summer and continue to be linked with more potential signings ahead of January.

However, while the club looks to bring in new faces, one of their academy talents could be on the way out.

Baird’s Leeds Future in Doubt

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Alex Baird may leave Elland Road for free this winter. The 18-year-old goalkeeper, currently part of Leeds’ Under-18s side, faces limited opportunities to progress into the first team.

Within the academy setup, Darryl Ombang and Rory Mahady are both ahead of Baird in the pecking order — with Mahady in particular seen as one of the club’s standout young goalkeepers. Both have recently enjoyed loan spells in the lower leagues, further strengthening their claim for future senior minutes.

Given this competition, a move elsewhere could offer Baird a clearer route to regular first-team football.

Strong Goalkeeper Depth at Senior Level

Leeds are already well covered in goalkeeping options at senior level. Illan Meslier, despite not featuring since early 2025, remains at the club but is expected to leave soon after a surprising summer stay.

In his absence, new signing Lucas Perri — brought in from Lyon — has established himself as Farke’s first-choice goalkeeper. Karl Darlow continues to provide reliable backup, while veteran Alex Cairns, another academy graduate, serves as third choice.

With the pathway to senior football blocked at multiple levels, Baird’s departure in January appears increasingly likely. His next chapter may well begin away from Elland Road — and how far his potential takes him will be one to watch.
