Leeds United forward Brenden Aaronson has opened up about how enduring one of the toughest periods of his life has helped him develop a stronger mindset and newfound resilience.

At the start of the 2023/24 season, Aaronson wasn’t exactly a fan favourite at Elland Road. Having been part of the Leeds side that was relegated from the Premier League, many supporters had lost faith in the American attacker.

He spent that following season on loan at Union Berlin, before returning to a Leeds team determined to bounce back under Daniel Farke — a mission they ultimately achieved by winning promotion from the Championship.

Aaronson’s form has been mixed since his return. His impressive display against West Ham, where he scored and looked sharp throughout, reminded fans of his quality.

However, inconsistent performances against Burnley and Brighton reignited frustration among supporters.

Despite the criticism, Aaronson says he’s learned to block out negativity and focus on his mental growth. Speaking on the Men in Blazers podcast, he described the period after Jesse Marsch’s departure and Leeds’ eventual relegation as the hardest months of his life.

“Those final months in the Premier League were the toughest I’ve ever faced,” he said. “Playing for such a big club with incredible fans brings huge pressure — you have to perform every single game. I was young and had never experienced anything like that.”

Aaronson explained that cutting himself off from social media was a turning point in rebuilding his confidence and focus.

“I’ve learned a lot about the mental side of football,” he added. “I remind myself before every match that I belong at this level.

I’ve stepped away from Instagram and Twitter — I don’t pay attention to any of that now. My family and fiancée handle it for me. For me, it’s all about being part of the team again, and I love that feeling.”

While Leeds fans were thrilled by his standout showing against West Ham, Aaronson knows he must find consistency to truly win them over.

His work rate and determination are unquestionable, but in the Premier League, effort alone won’t cut it.

Leeds need the version of Brenden Aaronson who shone against West Ham — not once in ten games, but week after week.
