Alan Shearer has warned that Nottingham Forest simply cannot afford to drop points when they host Leeds United in Sunday’s crucial Premier League clash at the City Ground.
The former Newcastle United striker believes the match is a huge test for Daniel Farke’s Leeds, who currently sit just four points clear of the relegation zone.
While Opta’s supercomputer still predicts survival for the Whites, their position is far from comfortable — and this encounter could prove to be a six-pointer in the battle to avoid the drop.
Shearer is backing Forest to come out on top, insisting they have enough quality to overpower Leeds on home turf. He pointed to the Tricky Trees’ encouraging 2-2 draw with Manchester United on 1 November, noting visible improvements under Sean Dyche.
Writing in the Metro (7 November), Shearer said:
“It’d be a disaster for Forest to drop points at home to what is going to be one of their rivals in the bottom half of the league. There were plenty of improvements last weekend against Man United, which they’ll take confidence from, and I think they’ll have too much for Leeds.”
Daniel Farke will have Willy Gnonto available for the trip to the City Ground, though Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Sebastiaan Bornauw are both fitness concerns. Forest, meanwhile, also have their share of injury problems.
For Farke, the objective remains crystal clear — keep Leeds in the Premier League. Failure to do so could spell the end of his time at Elland Road.
Ahead of the clash, the German boss is expected to make several tactical changes. Brenden Aaronson, who has shown flashes of promise but struggled in the 3-0 defeat to Brighton, may be replaced by Daniel James, with Gnonto offering an impact option off the bench.
Elsewhere, Ao Tanaka’s underwhelming display at the Amex could see Anton Sach return to the lineup, while Jaka Bijol may be dropped in favour of maintaining the defensive partnership between Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk.
All eyes will be on how Farke sets up his side — and whether Leeds can prove Shearer wrong at the City Ground.
