James Tavernier ‘deserving’ of a new Rangers contract

David Templeton believes Rangers should hand James Tavernier a new contract.

The former Rangers winger feels the club captain, who is now in the final year of his deal set to expire next summer, still has a crucial role to play at Ibrox. Tavernier, signed from Wigan in 2015 for around £250,000, is also due a testimonial.

Templeton says Tavernier’s experience is invaluable for new manager Danny Rohl, who is expected to reshape the squad across the next two transfer windows. Speaking to the Daily Record, he explained:

“The club don’t have many players left who truly understand what it means to be at Rangers. You need guys like Tav to help guide the new signings or the younger players. He knows exactly what the club is about, so if Rohl brings more players in, Tav can help them settle.”

Templeton also highlighted the shrinking Scottish core within the current squad—a characteristic that has historically been important at Rangers—and believes that influence is still needed.

However, he admitted that a contract decision will rely on several factors, including Rohl’s long-term plans and the financial aspect of any new deal.

“It depends on whether Rohl wants his own players,” Templeton added. “He might want to go younger, and he might already have another right-back in mind.

Money could also come into it. Tav might need to accept a reduced deal. There are lots of things to consider.”

Despite the uncertainty, Templeton insists Tavernier deserves to stay, praising his reliability, strong numbers, and positional flexibility.

“He’s still performing well. He plays every week, and Rohl clearly trusts him. He can play in different roles too—even in a back three. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more of that.”

Overall, Templeton is confident that Tavernier can continue to make a significant contribution to Rangers going forward.

While the final decision will rest on Rohl’s vision and the club’s financial situation, Tavernier’s importance and consistency make a compelling case for extending his contract.
