Rangers are reportedly in ongoing talks to sign David Watson from Kilmarnock as early as the January transfer window, aiming to beat competition from both Scottish clubs and the Championship.
On the pitch, the Gers are gradually turning their fortunes around under new manager Danny Rohl, who is targeting a fourth consecutive Scottish Premiership win this weekend.
Off the pitch, however, progress is equally crucial, particularly for sporting director Kevin Thelwell, who has faced criticism over his decisions since joining Ibrox.
Thelwell recently discussed the club’s winter plans, explaining that Rohl has been given time to assess the current squad before the January window.
“We spent a couple of weeks allowing Danny the opportunity to evaluate the group and review the players we currently have,” Thelwell said.
“We’ve had a big meeting this week to discuss his thoughts on the squad, what he’s learned, and areas we both feel can be improved. We’ll use this information, along with input from the owners and other sources, to plan for January, and we expect to be fairly active.”
Several names have already been linked with a move to Ibrox in 2026. Reports suggest Rangers are interested in Shea Charles from Southampton, a former Sheffield Wednesday player who impressed under Rohl on loan and could reunite with the manager.
Watson has also been widely mentioned as a potential target, and it seems Rangers’ pursuit is gaining momentum.
According to TeamTalk, Rangers are actively negotiating with Kilmarnock to sign Watson in January. The 20-year-old midfielder is out of contract next summer, giving Rangers the chance to secure him at a reduced fee while fending off Championship and Scottish rivals.
Rohl is reportedly a big admirer of Watson, praising his energy, tenacity, and technical ability, which he believes would strengthen Rangers’ squad in 2026. Watson’s performances at Kilmarnock have earned widespread acclaim, with teammate Robbie Deas stating:
“Davey’s fantastic, honestly. He’s one of the hardest workers you’ll ever meet. He’s absolutely fantastic. You see that today, putting in tackles late in the game.
Davey has all the ability to reach the top, and I have no doubt he will. I’m just glad he’s here playing for us week in, week out.”
While Rangers focused heavily on Championship talent over the summer, Watson brings experience of the Scottish Premiership and could be a key addition to Rohl’s squad in the new year.
