Sunderland are reportedly closing in on a January move for AC Milan striker Santiago Gimenez, with claims from Italy suggesting the deal is “almost complete”.

The Black Cats have been strongly linked with the Mexican forward in recent days, and it has been suggested they are preparing to seriously test Milan’s stance with a substantial bid.

Reports indicate Sunderland are actively “pushing” to land the 24-year-old and have already opened discussions with his representatives about a potential transfer in the new year.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Milan may be willing to let him go despite only signing him last winter.

The Italian outlet also claims the club could accept a loan move that includes an obligation to buy, as they look to move him on.

A new update from MilanNews24 claims Sunderland are close to striking an agreement with the Serie A club. Despite Gimenez managing just one goal so far this season, Sunderland are reportedly preparing a “huge” bid of around £26.3 million to secure his signature.

Milan are said to be satisfied with the valuation and are ready to approve the deal with little resistance. The report states: “The amount offered satisfies the board, who consider it enough to avoid financial losses and, above all, essential to generate the funds needed to unlock the market for a new centre forward. From the club’s point of view, the deal is practically done.”

What remains uncertain is whether Gimenez himself would accept a move to England. During the summer, speaking to Milan News, he expressed his desire to stay:

“I feel at home in Milan. I’m living a dream, and I thank God for the chance to be at such a great club. There were many rumours that I could leave, but I’m very happy here.

I spoke with the management and coaching staff, and the plan is for me to remain. I want to show the best version of myself because I don’t want to waste this opportunity.”
