Newcastle United referee confirmed for Everton clash
The Premier League has announced the match officials for Newcastle United’s upcoming trip to Everton on Saturday. The Magpies will visit the Hill Dickinson Stadium for the first time in what is expected to be a significant Premier League encounter.
Newcastle head into the match after ending their pre-international break slump with a 2–1 win over Manchester City last weekend. Eddie Howe’s men had suffered consecutive league defeats prior to that result.
Their momentum, however, was halted in midweek when Marseille defeated them in the Champions League.
Everton also go into the game on the back of an impressive result, having earned a 1–0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford. The Toffees have often caused problems for Newcastle in recent seasons, making this fixture a potentially tricky one.
Craig Pawson to take charge
Craig Pawson has been appointed as the referee for Saturday’s meeting. The Yorkshire official has overseen two Newcastle matches this season: their opening-day 0–0 draw with Aston Villa—where Ezri Konsa was shown a red card—and their 2–1 loss to Brighton at the Amex Stadium last month.
Pawson has officiated Everton just once this campaign, during their 3–0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. However, Toffees supporters will remember him most for last season’s fixture against Newcastle.
Although the match ended goalless at Goodison Park, controversy was plentiful. Newcastle were awarded a first-half penalty after a VAR check, but Jordan Pickford denied Anthony Gordon from the spot.
Later, tensions rose when Everton were denied a penalty despite a challenge involving Dan Burn and Dominic Calvert-Lewin — a decision that infuriated home fans.
After the match, then-Everton boss Sean Dyche vented his frustration over the incident:
“Everyone knows our record of not getting penalties and we haven’t got one again, so we’re frustrated. He’s trying to finish it, the ball is there to be finished and their player interferes.
If this happens in midfield, it’s given every time. But in the box, nothing. They didn’t even review it. That was a penalty — you simply can’t do that in the area.”
Full officiating team
Pawson will be assisted by Lee Betts and Matt Wilkes on the sidelines at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Dean Whitestone will serve as fourth official.
VAR duties at Stockley Park will be handled by Darren England, with Craig Taylor acting as assistant VAR.
