Everton 1-4 Newcastle United: Magpies claim first Premier League away win of the season
Newcastle United secured their first Premier League away victory of the season in emphatic fashion on Saturday evening, dismantling Everton 4-1 at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The Toffees had hoped to record three consecutive league wins under David Moyes, but those ambitions were undone early. Malick Thiaw opened the scoring after just 53 seconds, before Lewis Miley and Nick Woltemade extended Newcastle’s lead. Thiaw completed his brace in the 58th minute, and although Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall pulled a fine consolation goal back for Everton, it was far from enough to prevent a heavy defeat.
Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, was scathing of Everton’s defensive performance. “It was an excellent away day for Newcastle — we haven’t had many of those this season. Eddie Howe made six changes before kick-off, and the early goal certainly helped, but Newcastle managed the game brilliantly. They never looked in much danger — a really, really good performance,” he said.
Robinson added that Everton were largely responsible for their own downfall. “Everton’s defensive display will disappoint David Moyes. It was uncharacteristic — they caused most of their own problems, and it was unlike them.”
Meanwhile, Thierno Barry’s wait to score for Everton continues. The striker, signed from Villarreal in the summer for up to £27 million, had the ball in the net during Newcastle’s fourth goal, but VAR ruled it out for handball. Robinson noted Barry’s struggles during the match: “Barry had very little involvement. His touches were minimal, and every time the ball came near him he looked like he was walking on glass — as if he was about to slip or fall. I don’t know what boots he has on, but he looked completely off-balance.”
