“0% performance— David Moyes told must Axed 0% Everton dud after BBC pundit slammed ‘Absolute Shambles’

Jake O’Brien endured a difficult night as Everton suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United.

The Magpies left the Hill Dickinson Stadium with a comfortable victory, capitalising on a frustrating performance from David Moyes’ side.

Even after appearing satisfied when Idrissa Gueye was sent off against Manchester United recently, Moyes will have been far from impressed with what he witnessed this time.

Despite weather concerns on their trip to Merseyside, Newcastle were ruthless, while Everton’s defence was repeatedly breached — with O’Brien particularly struggling in L4.

Paul Robinson criticises Everton’s defending

Everton headed into the clash after a 2-1 Champions League loss to Marseille, extending a worrying run of away form that had seen them fail to claim three points on the road since October, their last win coming in April.

Given their strong home record at Hill Dickinson, confidence should have been high heading into the fixture against Eddie Howe’s men. Instead, the Toffees were undone early, conceding three goals in the first half to moments of Newcastle brilliance.

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson was scathing in his assessment, insisting Everton were architects of their own downfall after Lewis Miley netted Newcastle’s second. Speaking live on BBC Radio 5 Live, he said:

“What a defensive mess from an Everton point of view! They had several chances to clear the ball. It was Anthony Elanga again on this right-hand side. Jordan Pickford tried to pat the shot down with both hands and completely botched it.

He ended up bouncing it off his palms and between his legs. Everton are defensively an absolute shambles at the moment.”

Jake O’Brien the weakest link against Newcastle

Everton’s defending was so poor that any member of their backline could be singled out for criticism. Yet O’Brien appeared to struggle the most, especially when faced with Harvey Barnes and Lewis Hall on Newcastle’s left.

The Republic of Ireland defender attempted two crosses — failing to complete either — and registered just 33% accuracy with his long balls. While he did win two ground duels, it made little difference, particularly with Newcastle finding the net twice from set pieces.

It was a night full of problems for the Toffees and one that leaves plenty of work to do for Moyes’ squad after another difficult outing on Merseyside.
