Lucas Paquetá’s sending off during West Ham’s 2–0 home defeat to Liverpool has reignited online accusations of “match-fixing” from fans on social media.
The Brazilian midfielder received two quick yellow cards for dissent in the 83rd minute at the London Stadium, repeatedly confronting referee Darren England after Niclas Füllkrug fouled Dominik Szoboszlai.
Paquetá dismissal sparks renewed controversy
The incident has opened the door to fresh speculation regarding Paquetá’s conduct. The 28-year-old previously faced allegations of spot-fixing during the 2022/23 campaign, linked to suspicious betting patterns involving matches in which he received bookings.
Although he was cleared by an FA investigation, the governing body did sanction the former Lyon playmaker for “failing to comply with a requirement to answer questions and provide information” during the inquiry.
Paquetá had returned to West Ham’s starting XI on Sunday after serving a one-game suspension due to five yellow cards accumulated earlier this season.
In what had largely been a controlled contest with Liverpool, the Brazilian managed to avoid punishment until the closing stages, when he repeatedly confronted England despite teammates attempting to calm him down.
Two rapid bookings sealed Paquetá’s dismissal, prompting widespread reaction online.
Fans react to Paquetá’s red card
