Brighton make decision on selling Quality Star ahead of January talks with Marseille

Brighton are reportedly prepared to allow Danish midfielder Matt O’Riley to leave permanently, having made only 25 appearances since arriving in the summer of 2024.

The 25-year-old is currently on loan at Marseille, where he has made a strong impression. He has played 16 matches, scored one goal, and registered two assists, performances that have caught the attention of sporting director Medhi Benatia.

According to Football Insider, O’Riley is content at Marseille and would be willing to make the move permanent. With the midfielder clearly enjoying life in southern France, Brighton are said to be open to a sale, provided a suitable offer is made.

O’Riley signed for the Seagulls in 2024 for around £25 million, potentially rising to £30 million with add-ons — a transfer that made him the most expensive player ever sold by a Scottish club.

While he did score a dramatic late winner against Manchester City following his injury comeback, his remaining goals came from the penalty spot against Tottenham and Fulham.

Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, known to be an admirer of the Fulham academy product since his time at the Amex, may see strong interest from Marseille in sealing his permanent transfer.

However, Brighton are expected to demand at least £30 million, and other Ligue 1 clubs are reportedly monitoring the situation as well.

Marseille appear aware of the increasing competition, with reports suggesting they plan to begin negotiations in January to secure a deal ahead of rival bidders.
