Barry Ferguson Rangers return on cards as crazy Ibrox prospect emerges

Andy Halliday has argued that it would be unreasonable for Danny Rohl to play any part in choosing Kevin Thelwell’s successor at Rangers.

The former Ibrox midfielder believes it makes little sense for a manager who has only just arrived at the club to influence the appointment of a new sporting director.

Both Patrick Stewart and Thelwell have recently departed, leaving major roles vacant at Rangers. While Andrew Cavenagh will be pleased with the early impression Rohl has made, Halliday insists it would be surprising if the German boss were heavily involved in selecting new senior figures.

Rumours of a Barry Ferguson Return

Halliday also claims he has heard talk of Barry Ferguson potentially coming back to the club following Thelwell’s exit.

Ferguson briefly stepped in as interim head coach after Philippe Clement was dismissed last season, before leaving at the end of the campaign.

There is speculation the club may be looking to bring the Rangers legend back to Govan in a more prominent role.

Speaking on Open Goal on 2 December, Halliday said: “Was Ferguson not mentioned the other day as well? I think in some capacity, I don’t know what that was, but bringing him in.”

When it was suggested that Rohl might have a say in appointing Thelwell’s replacement, Halliday responded: “It’d be crazy if a manager picked a sporting director who’s been in the door for five or six weeks.”

Robbie Thelwell’s position at the club appears unaffected by his father’s departure, and the developments at Ibrox will be closely monitored.

David Weir had been linked with a return to Rangers after a successful run as Brighton’s technical director, but he has since taken a role with Strasbourg.

Rangers may now be wise to take their time and ensure they select the best possible candidates for both the CEO and sporting director positions.

Stewart and Thelwell lasted less than a year at the club, and the American ownership must now build a structure that will give Rohl every chance to succeed.

Ferguson may not have experience in the boardroom, but Halliday believes his stature and influence could still prove valuable in some capacity.
