McInerney believes Saturday’s contest presents a “free swing” for Sunderland, and expects Manchester City to be pushed hard by a fearless, high-quality opponent.

“I’m not looking forward to it,” he told Sports Mole. “I think this will be a very difficult game. Sunderland have been fantastic and fully deserve to be sitting sixth. Unless something dramatic happens, they look certain to stay up—they’re already well clear of danger.”

He praised Sunderland’s recruitment, singling out several stars:

Enzo Le Fée, who “looks talented enough to play for France,”
Brian Brobbey, who has become a reliable goalscoring super-sub, and
Bertrand Traoré, a well-known attacking threat.

McInerney also highlighted Granit Xhaka as an “absurdly good signing,” citing his leadership and influence following his successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen.

“This is a team playing with confidence, and they’re not afraid of anyone,” he added. “They can go to the Etihad without fear of dropping back into the relegation zone. It’s genuinely a free hit.”

He expects Sunderland to approach the match aggressively and without fear, making the fixture “a really interesting game.”

Midfield battle key in a potentially high-scoring encounter

While McInerney believes City can edge the midfield battle, he remains wary of Sunderland’s trio of Xhaka, Le Fée, and Noah Sadiki.

“Sadiki, Xhaka and Le Fée have been warriors. Xhaka brings experience, Sadiki provides energy, and Le Fée adds creativity. They don’t dominate possession, but they keep the ball well enough.”

However, he feels City should still have the upper hand with players like Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, Nico Gonzalez, and Tijjani Reijnders—and the potential return of Rodri, even briefly.
