Micah Richards and Alan Shearer both praised the electric atmosphere generated by the Elland Road crowd during Saturday night’s win, as Daniel Farke’s side continued their impressive run of form.
Leeds made it four matches unbeaten with a commanding display, as Dominic Calvert-Lewin struck twice and goals from Anton Stach and Ethan Ampadu sealed a memorable victory.
The result lifted the Whites six points clear of the relegation zone and further underlined the momentum building at Elland Road.
Once again this season, the home support played a crucial role. The Elland Road faithful provided a relentless wall of noise from start to finish, backing Farke and his players throughout the contest and staying behind long after the final whistle to applaud the squad and coaching staff.
Former Manchester City and England defender Richards even joked that securing a ticket to Elland Road has become almost impossible, hailing the atmosphere as among the very best in the Premier League.
Speaking on the podcast, Richards said:
“Elland Road, when it’s like that, has to be right up there.
We’ve talked about the Sunderland derby atmosphere, Liverpool, and even Spurs when their stadium first opened. But Elland Road belongs in that conversation.
“The fans are crazy in the best way. You can’t buy a ticket. You wait years for a season ticket, years just to get in. To be honest, I don’t think I could get one now. I used to have a link through someone at the club, but that’s gone.”
Alan Shearer also admitted his fondness for Leeds’ famous old ground, though his affection is perhaps unsurprising given his prolific record there. The former Newcastle United striker scored 21 goals in just 24 appearances against the Whites.
“I love Elland Road,” Shearer said. “I love Elland Road more than you love Elland Road, Micah.”
When it was suggested his goalscoring success against Leeds might explain that admiration, Shearer replied with a smile: “Yes, it was, yeah.”
