Rangers handed new VAR verdict as offside Bojan Miovski goal vs Hearts camera angle probed

Rangers were left feeling aggrieved after Bojan Miovski saw an early goal ruled out for offside during their 2-1 defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle, with pundit Tam McManus questioning VAR’s decision-making.

The disallowed strike proved a key moment as Hearts went on to claim victory, extending their lead at the top of the Premiership to 12 points and ending Danny Röhl’s unbeaten league run. Goals from Lawrence Shankland and Stuart Findlay put the hosts in control before Youssef Chermiti grabbed a late consolation for Rangers. The result marked Hearts’ fourth win of the season over both Rangers and Celtic.

Before Findlay broke the deadlock, Miovski thought he had handed Rangers the lead. The North Macedonia international reacted quickest at the back post to turn Emmanuel Fernandez’s header into the bottom corner, with referee Nick Walsh initially allowing the goal.

However, after a VAR review led by Grant Irvine, the strike was ruled out for offside following a lines check, a decision that shifted the momentum firmly in Hearts’ favour.

Former Hibernian striker McManus believes Rangers were unlucky and insists the incident did not meet the threshold for VAR intervention.

Speaking on PLZ, he said: “I thought Rangers started the game better in terms of possession, and the big moment is obviously the offside goal. It’s incredibly tight.

“I don’t think it’s a clear offside. From the angle I saw, I thought he was onside when his foot comes out. Rangers were a bit hard done by.

“You’d expect the SFA and VAR to have more angles, because if that’s the only one, I don’t think you can tell he’s offside. If that goal stands, it could be a completely different game.

“That said, Hearts took control after that and probably could have won more comfortably.”
