Crystal Palace are reportedly close to completing a £35 million ($40m) deal to sign Tottenham Hotspur winger Brennan Johnson ahead of the January transfer window.
However, while an agreement is said to be in place between the two clubs, the player himself has yet to make a final decision on his future.
According to The Athletic, Palace have reached common ground with Spurs but still need to convince Johnson, who is weighing up his options amid interest from other Premier League sides.
Aston Villa and Bournemouth are both believed to be monitoring the situation, with the Wales international struggling for consistent game time under new Spurs boss Thomas Frank.
Despite scoring the winning goal in last season’s Europa League final and finishing as Tottenham’s top scorer with 18 goals across all competitions, Johnson has started just six league matches this campaign. His reduced role has largely followed the summer arrival of Mohammed Kudus from West Ham.
If the move goes through, Johnson would become Tottenham’s fourth-biggest sale of all time, behind Harry Kane, Gareth Bale and Kyle Walker.
However, Spurs would still take a financial hit, having paid £47.5 million to sign him from Nottingham Forest in 2023. Palace, meanwhile, are keen to bolster their squad as Oliver Glasner looks to push the club forward both domestically and in Europe.
Spurs eye replacements
Tottenham are already exploring potential replacements, with RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande reportedly on their radar, according to BBC Sport. The club also maintain an interest in Manchester City’s Savinho, whom they attempted to sign during the summer window.
Spurs’ season so far
Tottenham have endured a difficult domestic campaign, currently sitting 11th in the Premier League after collecting 25 points from 18 matches. They have won seven and lost seven games but remain just seven points off the top four, meaning a strong run could quickly change their fortunes.
Despite the inconsistent results, Thomas Frank insists the club is heading in the right direction. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said:
“I think that’s fair. You can’t say everything is good if you lose 15 games in a row, but what I like is that we haven’t had two bad performances back-to-back. That’s a big difference. We’ve had poor games, but we’ve also responded well in others, and that shows progress.”
He added:
“We’re in a transition phase. Yes, we’re a Champions League club, but we only qualified by winning the Europa League, not by finishing in the top four.
We finished 17th last season, and now we’re balancing Champions League football with the Premier League, which is extremely demanding.”
What’s next
Tottenham return to Premier League action on New Year’s Day against Brentford. Their previous outing saw them edge Crystal Palace 1–0 thanks to an Archie Gray header, with Johnson appearing as a second-half substitute.
