Everton travel to the City Ground this evening to face Nottingham Forest in what will be the final Premier League fixture of 2026.
After a frustrating draw with Burnley last time out, David Moyes will be eager to see his side close out the year with a much-needed victory.
The Toffees can take confidence from their previous meeting with Forest, having cruised to a 3–0 win earlier in the campaign, with Thierno Barry scoring his first and only goal of the season.
That result, combined with Forest’s recent struggles — three defeats in their last four league outings — gives Everton reason for optimism.
However, former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson believes the Merseyside club could be in for a tough night.

Writing in his Sportskeeda column, Merson pointed to key absences that he feels will significantly weaken Moyes’ side.
He highlighted the unavailability of Iliman Ndiaye, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Jack Grealish as a major concern.
“With Iliman Ndiaye away at AFCON, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall injured and Jack Grealish unwell, I expect Everton to struggle,” Merson said.
“If those three don’t play, Everton look toothless going forward. They haven’t scored in their last three matches either.
“I’m backing Forest to pick up a massive three points that will create some breathing room between them and West Ham.”

Despite Merson’s verdict, Everton’s recent history against Forest is encouraging. The Toffees have won four of their last five meetings with the East Midlands side, including two victories at the City Ground.

With the January transfer window approaching, Everton will be keen to strengthen their position and make themselves an even more attractive prospect for potential signings.
