Jarrod Bowen on fire, but 2/10 teammate undoes all his brilliant work – West Ham player ratings vs Brighton

West Ham were left to rue another missed opportunity in their fight for Premier League survival after being held to a frustrating 2-2 draw by Brighton at the London Stadium on Tuesday night.

Under mounting pressure, Nuno Espírito Santo watched his side take the lead twice, only to be undone by defensive errors that allowed Brighton to leave East London with a point.

The visitors capitalised on sloppy moments at the back, compounding West Ham’s growing problems.

Jarrod Bowen opened the scoring against the run of play in the 10th minute, racing onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Lucas Paquetá and finishing clinically.

However, the lead lasted just over 20 minutes as Danny Welbeck converted from the penalty spot after Max Kilman clumsily fouled Yankuba Minteh inside the area.

West Ham then rode their luck when Paquetá wrestled Lewis Dunk to the ground, gifting Brighton another penalty. Welbeck stepped up again but rattled the crossbar with an audacious Panenka attempt.

Tempers flared after the miss, with Keith Hackett expecting the FA to take action following a mass confrontation between both sets of players.

The hosts were handed a lifeline just before half-time when VAR intervened to award West Ham a penalty, which Paquetá calmly dispatched.

However, the Hammers failed to protect their advantage once again, as Joel Veltman rose from a corner to head home the equaliser in the 61st minute.

There was little debate over the standout performer on the night. Bowen’s early goal took him level with Michail Antonio for Premier League goal involvements for West Ham and moved him closer to becoming the club’s all-time top Premier League scorer.

His movement and finishing were outstanding, and while Paquetá also impressed in spells, his reckless foul that led to Brighton’s second penalty dented his overall display.

Mateus Fernandes and Soungoutou Magassa also caught the eye, but Bowen was the clear standout, earning an 8/10 rating.

Max Kilman struggles again

It was another difficult outing for Max Kilman, whose performance raised serious concerns. He conceded the first penalty and was fortunate to avoid a booking, before later crashing into Minteh and finally seeing yellow.

To make matters worse, he was heavily involved in the defensive breakdown that allowed Veltman to score Brighton’s equaliser from a corner. It was yet another alarming display from the centre-back, who looked completely out of sync. A 2/10 rating summed up his night.
