Rangers Make Contact to Seal Deal for ‘Superstar’ as Danny Rohl First Signing

Rangers are pressing ahead with plans to bring in AEK Athens defender James Penrice on loan this month, according to the Daily Mail.

The Light Blues have endured a turbulent campaign so far, following a record-breaking start that ultimately led to Russell Martin’s dismissal in October. Despite welcoming 13 new signings in the summer, Martin was replaced by Danny Rohl, who is now being backed in the January transfer window as the club look to revive their season.

Strengthening at left-back has emerged as a top priority for Rohl, and Penrice has quickly become a leading target.

Rangers Renew Interest in Penrice

The 27-year-old, once described as a “superstar,” joined AEK Athens from Hearts for £2 million last summer after being named the Tynecastle club’s Player of the Year. However, his move to Greece has not gone entirely to plan, opening the door for Rangers to revive their interest after previously coming close to signing him before his switch abroad.

Rohl is keen to bring Penrice to Ibrox on a loan deal to bolster his defensive options. At present, Jayden Meghoma is the only natural left-back available, following Ridvan Yilmaz’s return to Turkey. James Tavernier, Max Aarons and Derek Cornelius have all been deployed on the left at various points this season, underlining the need for specialist cover.

As a result, Rangers have stepped up their pursuit of a new left-back, with fresh contact made over a potential move in recent days.

More January business on the cards

After ending 2025 with a victory over St Mirren, Rangers sit third in the Scottish Premiership, six points behind leaders Hearts. Rohl has publicly expressed belief that his squad can mount a title challenge, but reinforcements are widely viewed as essential if that ambition is to be realised.

According to GIVEMESPORT, Rangers are also exploring a return for Josh Windass from Wrexham, while midfielder Jens Hjerto-Dahl is another player of interest.

Belgian Under-21 international Tuur Rommens has been identified as an alternative option should a deal for Penrice fall through.

A new striker is also high on the agenda, with concerns surrounding the goal output of Bojan Miovski, Youssef Chermiti and Danilo.
