Sunderland head coach Régis Le Bris expressed his satisfaction with his side’s development after they held Manchester City to a goalless draw at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats delivered an impressive display, particularly in the first half, where they limited Pep Guardiola’s side and created several promising chances of their own. Le Bris opted against his usual flat back five, instead pushing Trai Hume and Eliezer Mayenda into more advanced roles — a tactical shift that paid off.
Having suffered a 3-0 defeat to City earlier in December, Le Bris believes this latest performance highlights the progress his team has made this season.
“Another good point against one of the best teams in Europe,” Le Bris said. “They have so many threats and can score in different ways, but I think we defended well. We pressed high, were more consistent in the mid-block, and stayed solid in our defensive shape.
“It was a kind of hybrid system. We used something similar at Liverpool before. Dropping too deep against a team like City makes it difficult to cope with their ball control and chance creation. I think today it worked well. With the ball, we also showed some really good moments.”
He added that Sunderland handled City’s press far better than in their previous meeting, allowing them to retain possession and build more confidently.
“They were strong again today, but we were better than last time. This point helped us manage the game and breathe a little because having the ball is important. Our build-up play, especially in the first half, was very good.”
Le Bris believes the improvement between the two meetings underlines his squad’s willingness to learn and adapt.
“I think we are learning. From the first game against them to this one, we adjusted many things. It shows the players are ready to learn and change in order to be more competitive, which is very positive.”
The Sunderland boss also praised his squad depth, particularly with several senior players unavailable due to suspension and AFCON commitments.
“I said before AFCON that we shouldn’t set limits,” he added. “We have many good players. They need time to learn and show their quality, but in training we see their potential. With structure, confidence and strong leaders, they can perform. Dennis and Eli were very good today.”
Le Bris also provided an update on Brian Brobbey, who was forced off just before the hour mark.
“He felt some tightness, but I don’t think it’s anything serious at the moment,” he confirmed.
