Wilfried Nancy must be prepared to make tough, uncompromising decisions within his Celtic squad if he is to have any real hope of securing his long-term future at the club.

The Hoops suffered a damaging 3-1 defeat to Rangers in the Scottish Premiership at Parkhead on Saturday lunchtime, a result that saw Danny Rohl’s side draw level on points with their Old Firm rivals.

Wilfried Nancy Must Make a Call on Kasper Schmeichel

While Nancy and the Celtic hierarchy will inevitably come under heavy fire following another Old Firm setback, Kasper Schmeichel also warrants significant scrutiny.

The Danish goalkeeper started against Rangers and conceded three goals in what was yet another underwhelming display.

Schmeichel could arguably have done better with all three strikes, managing just one save throughout the match and posting a goals-prevented figure of -1.34, according to FotMob. Unsurprisingly, criticism soon followed.

Former Celtic striker Tam McManus did not hold back when sharing his thoughts on X, writing:

“Yet another abysmal second-half performance from Celtic which could be the final nail in the coffin for Nancy. Every manager adjusts at half-time against Celtic under Nancy and goes on to win.

Schmeichel has been awful — any shot on target seems to go in, while Butland has been superb at the other end.”

Celtic Must Address the Goalkeeping Issue

Nancy has several problems to solve if Celtic are to start converting promising performances into positive results, but the goalkeeping position should be at the very top of his priorities.

Rated just 2/10 against Rangers, Schmeichel has looked a shadow of his former self this season and has done little to justify his continued place in the starting XI.

Celtic require a goalkeeper who can operate comfortably within Nancy’s possession-based system, while also delivering decisive saves in crucial moments — something the former Leicester City man has failed to provide.

At 39, Schmeichel represents a short-term solution at best. Celtic must begin planning for the future by identifying a goalkeeper capable of being a long-term presence at the club.

While Schmeichel’s career achievements are undeniable, his recent performances have raised serious concerns, leaving Nancy and the club with a decision that can no longer be ignored.
