Celtic ‘hold talks’ to sign Leeds United striker Joel Piroe on loan

Celtic have reportedly held discussions to bring Leeds United striker Joel Piroe to the club on loan.

While Martin O’Neill dismissed speculation around Callum Wilson during his Saturday press conference, he confirmed that progress is being made on transfer business in general.

The January window has been dominated by striker rumours, with new names emerging almost daily. O’Neill suggested that the loan market could be a key focus for Celtic, as the club seeks immediate attacking reinforcements in a tightly contested title race.

Dutch forward Piroe appears to fit the profile Celtic are targeting. According to Anthony Joseph, Leeds are “due to make a decision,” with Celtic favouring a loan deal and prepared to meet the player’s wage demands.

However, a potential complication arises from Leeds’ ownership. The club is owned by 49ers Enterprises, who also recently took over Rangers, raising questions over whether they would strengthen a competitor in the Scottish Premiership.

Piroe, 26, impressed at Swansea City under Russell Martin before Leeds signed him for £10 million in 2023.

He scored 32 goals across two Championship seasons but has struggled for minutes in the Premier League due to Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s form.

The left-footed striker is known for linking up well with midfielders and has a playing style reminiscent of Celtic’s Kelechi Iheanacho. Last week, he officially switched his international allegiance to Suriname, qualifying through his father.

Commenting on Celtic’s striker search, O’Neill said:
“We are in search of those elusive goalscorers, but we’re not the only team looking. Remarkably, I think we are making progress. We’re definitely a bit closer. I dread these interviews and the questions, but I can’t wait until early February.

“To me, it’s essential that business is done quickly. We can’t change the squad for the Bologna game, but next week, we hope to have some new faces in place for the Hearts fixture if possible.”
