DEAL IMMINENT; West Ham in pole position to sign £150k-a-week Man City star after opening talks

West Ham are reportedly in prime position to sign a Manchester City midfielder after initiating talks, according to recent reports.

West Ham secure dramatic London derby win
The Hammers are riding a wave of momentum after a shock 2-1 victory away to Tottenham in the London derby, marking their first Premier League win since early November and delivering a crucial boost to their relegation fight.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s side produced a spirited performance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, ending a ten-game winless streak in the league and injecting new life into their season.

Crysencio Summerville gave West Ham a perfect start, his strike taking a deflection into the net to make it 1-0. The early goal stunned the hosts and provided a much-needed confidence boost for the visitors.

Tottenham fought back through a Cristian Romero header, but Callum Wilson snatched the winner in stoppage time, securing all three points for the struggling Hammers.

The result represents a remarkable turnaround for a side that had looked destined for relegation. West Ham’s previous league win came on November 8 against Burnley, making this triumph particularly significant for Nuno’s future at the club.

West Ham target Manchester City’s Mateo Kovacic
Amid the good news from their London derby triumph, West Ham are also pressing ahead in the transfer market.

According to Brazilian outlet O Dia and journalist Fabricio Lopes, as Flamengo pursue West Ham midfielder Lucas Paquetá, the Hammers are already looking at a potential replacement. Paquetá was absent for the Tottenham game, with a return to Brazil expected this month.

West Ham have reportedly opened talks with Manchester City midfielder Mateo Kovacic over a potential move.

The Croatian, a former Chelsea star earning £150,000 per week, is out of contract in the summer and could be available at a reduced fee before the transfer deadline on February 2.

While AC Milan are also reportedly interested, West Ham are said to have “taken the lead” for Kovacic, who has made just 37 minutes of appearances across all competitions this season.

The 111-cap Croatia international has spent most of the 2025/26 campaign sidelined with injury and is not expected back until at least the first half of March, according to O Dia.

West Ham are in urgent need of reinforcements who can make an immediate impact, particularly given the precarious nature of their league position despite today’s lifeline win over Spurs.

However, Kovacic would likely need to take a significant pay cut to replace Paquetá and potentially accept playing in the Championship if West Ham fail to stay up. It remains to be seen whether the move can materialize under these conditions.
