Dominic Calvert-Lewin may have taken a little time to win over the Elland Road faithful, but there is now no disputing that Leeds United struck gold with his signing.
Leeds’ summer recruitment strategy came under scrutiny after the club opted against spending big on a marquee forward. Instead, the Whites supplemented their Championship Golden Boot winner with two strikers brought in on free transfers. One of those additions was Calvert-Lewin, a move that initially raised eyebrows due to concerns surrounding his finishing and injury history.
Those doubts were amplified early on, as the 28-year-old took time to find the net in Leeds colours. His first goal arrived away at Wolves in September, a trademark towering header that showcased his aerial strength. However, that breakthrough also came amid several missed opportunities, which some supporters and neutral observers were quick to highlight.
Despite that, Calvert-Lewin’s all-round contribution was consistently impressive. His physical presence, link-up play and work rate were clear assets, even when the goals were slow to follow. Now, he has added clinical finishing to his game, transforming himself into one of the most effective strikers in the division.
His penalty at St James’ Park took him to nine goals for the season, along with one assist. Only Erling Haaland (20), Igor Thiago (16) and Antoine Semenyo (10) have found the net more often than Leeds’ free signing. That run of form was capped by Calvert-Lewin being named Premier League Player of the Month for December, after scoring six goals in five games to close out 2025.
With goals flowing and confidence high, Calvert-Lewin is clearly enjoying the backing he is receiving from the Leeds supporters. The now-familiar chant to the tune of Wham!’s Last Christmas underlines just how popular he has become at Elland Road. Still, the striker feels his overall contribution is not always fully appreciated.
Speaking on Leeds United’s YouTube channel alongside Jayden Bogle and Ethan Ampadu, the trio were asked to respond to various statements. When Ampadu read out, “Defenders never get enough credit, unless they score,” Calvert-Lewin was quick with a telling response: “If you flip the question, strikers don’t get credit unless they score.”
It is a fair point. Leeds look a completely different side when Calvert-Lewin is absent, which speaks volumes about his influence. His aerial ability is arguably matched by only one other striker in the division, and in the bottom half of the league, there are few better options for how Leeds want to play.
Calvert-Lewin is the perfect focal point, allowing Leeds to move up the pitch effectively when playing to his strengths. His experience, hold-up play and relentless running cause constant problems for centre-backs, qualities that are difficult to find — especially in a player signed on a free transfer.
The goals now arriving are a just reward for his tireless work and underline his importance in making Leeds a stronger, more complete team.
