Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta has formally told the club that he wants to leave during the January transfer window, with Aston Villa and Juventus among the sides monitoring his situation.
Mateta has been keen on a move away from Selhurst Park since last summer, when several clubs explored potential deals. Contract talks with Palace failed to reach an agreement, despite the striker being tied down until the summer of 2027. Interest has resurfaced this month, but Juventus’ proposal of a modest €2m (£1.7m) loan fee was immediately dismissed.
Executive chairman Steve Parish remains unwilling to sanction cut-price departures and continues to value Mateta at around £35m, even with the striker turning 29 in June. As a result, Palace are not actively pushing for a sale, and a January exit is not currently close.
The Eagles are instead focused on reinforcing their squad as they target a strong Premier League finish and a deep run in the Conference League. They have already sold captain Marc Guehi to Manchester City for £20m, while head coach Oliver Glasner has confirmed he will step down at the end of the season.
Villa have intensified their pursuit of Tammy Abraham, currently on loan at Besiktas from Roma, but Mateta remains an alternative option. Juventus, meanwhile, have not ruled out a renewed approach but are also negotiating for Fenerbahce striker Youssef En-Nesyri.
Mateta’s ambition is to join a Champions League club, or one with a strong chance of qualifying next season. He is also eyeing a place in France’s squad for this summer’s World Cup, having earned his first call-up in October and scoring his maiden international goal against Iceland.
Palace rejected multiple approaches from Champions League sides last summer, while Tottenham made a late enquiry before opting to loan Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain. Atalanta, AC Milan, Juventus and several Premier League clubs were also tracking Mateta, but no deal materialised.
Signed from Mainz in January 2021 in a deal worth around £15m, Mateta has developed into one of the Premier League’s most effective No 9s. In 2025, only Erling Haaland has scored more league goals, while since Glasner’s first match in charge in February 2024, only Haaland and Mohamed Salah have outscored him.
However, his recent form has dipped slightly, with just one open-play goal in the last two and a half months. Overall, Mateta has scored 56 goals in 185 appearances for Palace, playing a key role in their FA Cup and Community Shield successes in 2025.
This season, he has started all 22 league games, scoring eight goals, and has added two goals and two assists in cup competitions. Last term, his 17 goals helped Palace win the FA Cup and secure European qualification for the first time.
The 28-year-old currently has three caps and two goals for France, but while his desire to leave is now public, Palace remain adamant that any deal must meet their valuation and will not be rushed into a sale.
