Leicester City welcome Oxford United this weekend as they search for their first victory in three matches. The Foxes will be eager to kick off 2026 positively and reignite a campaign that has fallen well below expectations.

Currently sitting 14th in the table, any further slip-ups will only increase the scrutiny on head coach Marti Cifuentes.

Well adrift of the play-off picture, Leicester must quickly find momentum if they are to mount a late push for the top six. January reinforcements could prove crucial as they attempt to reverse their fortunes.

Last time out, Leicester salvaged a 1-1 draw away at Wrexham. Jannik Vestergaard struck late at the Racecourse Ground to rescue a point and ease the pressure on Cifuentes, at least temporarily.

Oxford United, meanwhile, are enduring a difficult season of their own and currently sit 23rd in the Championship. The U’s have already turned to managerial changes in an effort to spark a revival.

Gary Rowett was dismissed shortly before Christmas after a year in charge, with former Luton Town and Wycombe Wanderers boss Matt Bloomfield appointed as his successor. Bloomfield has overseen two league games so far, both ending goalless draws at the Kassam Stadium against Bristol City and QPR.

“This is a game that could swing either way. Leicester City will see this as a must-win fixture, and on paper they clearly possess more quality across their squad than Oxford United.

“That said, Oxford have shown under Bloomfield that they are well-organised and difficult to break down. The U’s will need to start picking up wins soon to keep their survival hopes alive, and that could leave space for Leicester to exploit.

“Ultimately though, I think Leicester’s quality will tell. As we saw against West Brom, they have players capable of making the difference, and I expect that to be the case again.”

“Oxford United have opened Matt Bloomfield’s reign with back-to-back 0-0 draws. It’s a step forward, but likely not enough to pull them out of trouble on its own.

“To their credit, the club appears to be backing the new manager in the transfer market, and a team scrapping for every point can be a real threat to Leicester.

“That’s particularly relevant given the Foxes have lacked that same urgency at times this season. It’s been a frustrating year at the King Power Stadium, but they should still have enough to come out on top.

“A draw wouldn’t be a shock, but I’m leaning towards a narrow home win.”
