Exclusive: Dan Neil axed by Sunderland and told to leave after West Ham swoop

Sunderland are prepared to offload Dan Neil after West Ham United stepped up their interest in the midfielder ahead of Saturday’s clash between the two sides, Football Insider sources have revealed.

The 24-year-old was notably absent from the Black Cats’ matchday squad to face the Hammers, a decision that reflects Regis Le Bris’ willingness to cash in now rather than risk losing the player for nothing when his contract expires in the summer.

Neil has found opportunities limited under Le Bris this season and is understood to be open to a fresh challenge in pursuit of regular first-team football.

From West Ham’s perspective, the move makes sense as they continue their battle for Premier League survival and look to inject more experience into their squad.

The Hammers have already been active in the market in recent weeks, with Adama Traore closing in on a switch to the London Stadium, and Neil could be another smart addition if Nuno Espirito Santo is able to secure his services.

The midfielder’s underlying numbers suggest he could still offer plenty. According to FotMob statistics from 24 January, Neil impressed in the Championship last season, averaging 5.84 recoveries per game, completing 0.93 successful dribbles and maintaining an 83.9 per cent pass completion rate. Those figures highlight his reliability in possession and his work rate off the ball.

Even if West Ham fail to preserve their top-flight status this season, Neil could still prove a valuable asset in the Championship. The 24-year-old captained Sunderland to promotion in the 2024–25 campaign and has experience of leading a side through the demands of the second tier.

Sunderland, meanwhile, are not finished with their January business. Football Insider has reported that the club have opened discussions over a loan move for Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Jonas Omlin, with the aim of adding experienced cover behind Robin Roefs.

At the same time, the Black Cats are determined to resist interest in Noah Sadiki. Despite Manchester United monitoring the DR Congo international, Sunderland have no intention of selling the 21-year-old this month.

Sadiki has been a key figure in their impressive form this season, and Le Bris is keen to keep him as the club pushes to finish as high as possible in the Premier League standings.
