Reports suggest that Rangers are now eyeing a Premier League talent to fill the gap left by Barron. According to Sheffield-based publication The Star, Rangers have pulled ahead of Sheffield United in the race to sign Sunderland central midfielder Dan Neil during the January transfer window.

The Englishman is a key target for the Blades, but the Gers are reportedly in a stronger position, with journalist Alan Nixon claiming that Rangers can offer higher wages than the interested English clubs.

Nixon also notes that Neil could wait until the summer to move on a free transfer if a deal with Sunderland cannot be agreed before the February deadline.

Why Rangers Should Act Now

Rather than waiting for the summer, Rangers are being urged to push for a deal to sign Neil immediately. With Barron potentially out for more than two months and the Light Blues engaged in a tight title race with Celtic and Hearts, an instant replacement is crucial.

There are few like-for-like options available, and Neil is viewed as a player who could step straight into Barron’s role.

While he has made only three Premier League appearances this season, Neil played 44 times in the Championship for Sunderland in 2024/25, demonstrating his ability as a combative and effective central midfielder.

Statistics from Neil’s Championship campaign show a remarkable similarity to Barron’s output in the Premiership, highlighting his tackling, duels, interceptions, and clearances — all key attributes for a midfield “terrier” tasked with disrupting play and regaining possession.
