In the 83rd minute, the Sunderland captain, Granit Xhaka, became embroiled in a furious exchange with some West Ham supporters, leaving the visiting bench in chaos.
A source close to the incident has now disclosed exactly what the Swiss midfielder said during the confrontation.
Despite remaining in the relegation zone, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side lifted spirits with a dominant performance against one of the Premier League’s surprise teams.
The scoring opened in the 14th minute through Crysencio Summerville, with Jarrod Bowen later converting a penalty to double West Ham’s advantage.
Mateus Fernandes, arguably West Ham’s standout performer of the day, added a third before halftime, while Brian Brobbey netted a consolation goal in the 66th minute, leaving Sunderland in mid-table.

According to a supporter who witnessed the spat, the incident began after Nordi Mukiele was substituted for Luke O’Nien in the 83rd minute. The defender appeared visibly frustrated, gesturing angrily and exchanging words with his manager. The fan explained:
“Everyone’s shouting ‘Whey! Whey!’ at him, like we always do, teasing him a bit. Then he turned back towards the pitch and snapped at the manager, which drew an even louder cheer.

The witness added that Xhaka told the West Ham supporters to respect his teammate, saying:
“He went over to one of my friends and was basically saying, ‘Show some respect, show some respect.’ Ironically, Mukiele had just argued with his own manager. The crowd then started giving it back to Xhaka, telling him to calm down.
Things escalated when another fan approached him, and Xhaka responded with ‘I’ll see you outside, I’ll see you outside.’ Even after the match, as he headed down the tunnel, he was still confronting the same person. It was all on him—completely losing his head.”
Sunderland Felt Xhaka’s Absence, Says Stuart Pearce
The encounter highlighted Xhaka’s importance to Sunderland. Former England defender Stuart Pearce told talkSPORT that Xhaka’s absence was a key factor in their defeat.
“They struggled to control the midfield and gave the ball away too easily in central areas. Xhaka’s presence is vital, and today they missed him massively. He’s arguably one of the signings of the season,” Pearce explained.
