Jamie Vardy’s cryptic message on Leicester City situation as Marti Cifuentes sacked

For Leicester City supporters, it feels as though the club is stuck in a familiar and frustrating cycle. Marti Cifuentes became the latest head coach to lose his job after a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Oxford United on Saturday.

The Spaniard was appointed last summer, but his task was severely complicated by ongoing financial constraints at the King Power Stadium.

Formerly in charge of QPR, Cifuentes was unable to strengthen his squad in the transfer market, with Leicester—alongside Sheffield Wednesday—failing to spend any money on permanent signings.

As a result, the campaign has been a hugely challenging one for the Foxes. The latest loss leaves them 14th in the Championship, just nine points clear of the relegation places. With a potential points deduction looming, the prospect of dropping into League One remains a genuine concern, while any hopes of promotion continue to fade.

Unsurprisingly, frustration among supporters has increasingly been directed toward the club’s hierarchy, particularly director of football Jon Rudkin. That sentiment has now been subtly echoed by Leicester icon Jamie Vardy.

Vardy, who ended his 13-year association with Leicester at the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, joined Italian side Cremonese, where he has since scored five goals in 18 Serie A appearances. Despite turning 39, the former England international remains a beloved figure among Foxes fans after amassing 200 goals in 500 games for the club.

Following Cremonese’s home match against Verona, Vardy was approached by a Leicester supporter who asked: “So, Rudkin’s the problem?” Vardy responded cautiously, replying: “I can neither confirm nor deny.”

While non-committal, many supporters have interpreted the comment as telling, believing it reflects the widespread dissatisfaction surrounding Rudkin’s role at the club.

Leicester’s managerial instability over the past two years has only deepened those concerns. Enzo Maresca guided the Foxes to the Championship title in the 2023/24 season, securing an immediate return to the Premier League, but his departure to Chelsea set off a chain of missteps. Steve Cooper was appointed next, despite his strong links to rivals Nottingham Forest, and was dismissed after just 15 matches.

Ruud van Nistelrooy then took charge but failed to prevent another relegation. His tenure ended abruptly days before pre-season, paving the way for Cifuentes’ arrival. However, without meaningful backing from the board, the Spaniard’s reign was short-lived.

Ultimately, responsibility now falls squarely on Rudkin, whose decisions have shaped Leicester’s recent struggles. With pressure mounting and fan patience wearing thin, the club’s next managerial appointment could define its immediate future—and must be the right one.
