Oxford United Eye Faroe Islands Defender Andrias Edmundsson as Matt Bloomfield Looks to Strengthen Squad

Oxford United have shown full support for new manager Matt Bloomfield this month and are actively pursuing further reinforcements, with Andrias Edmundsson reportedly a prime target.

According to Rudy Galetti, Oxford United have submitted a bid for the Wisla Plock defender as the club seeks to improve its Championship fortunes.

Currently embroiled in a relegation battle, the U’s find themselves 23rd in the table, three points from safety, after narrowly avoiding the drop last season by finishing four points clear of the relegation zone.

Under Bloomfield’s guidance, Oxford have made a promising start, remaining unbeaten with back-to-back 0-0 draws and a notable 2-1 away win at Leicester City.

With the January transfer window closing soon, clubs are racing to finalize deals, and Oxford have already strengthened their squad with five new signings, with Edmundsson potentially set to become the sixth.

The 22-year-old centre-back has experience outside England but is eager to return to English football. Edmundsson spent his youth at Sunderland, though he never made a senior appearance for the Black Cats. He then played in Spain’s fourth tier with CDA Aguilas FC before moving to Poland’s Chojniczanka Chojnice in the third tier.

Since joining Wisla Plock, Edmundsson has been a regular starter, helping the club secure promotion to the Ekstraklasa, where they currently sit joint-top of the Polish top flight.

His consistent performances have attracted attention across Europe, and Oxford are hoping to bring him to the Kassam Stadium to bolster their defence.

Bloomfield is prioritizing defensive reinforcements, having limited options at the heart of his backline. So far, Oxford have added four midfielders—Jamie McDonnell (Nottingham Forest), Yunus Konak and Myles Peart-Harris (Brentford), and Jamie Donley (Spurs)—alongside winger Jin-Woo Jeon.

Edmundsson would address a key defensive need as the U’s aim to climb the Championship table.

It has been a busy month for Oxford United, and more activity is expected in the closing days of the January transfer window.
