Rangers’ Lowball Bid Frustrates European Club as January Transfer Window Closes

Rangers have left a European club frustrated after submitting a low offer for a new midfielder in the final days of the January transfer window.

Rohl Remains Positive Despite European Setback
Danny Rohl insists Rangers are heading in the right direction, despite ending their disappointing Europa League campaign with a 3-1 defeat to Porto at the Estádio do Dragão.

Djeidi Gassama gave the Light Blues an early lead after just six minutes, and Rangers initially looked comfortable.

However, the visitors faltered before halftime, with goals from teenage sensation Rodrigo Mora, Francisco Moura—following a collision between skipper James Tavernier and goalkeeper Jack Butland—and an Emmanuel Fernandez own goal ultimately turning the match on its head.

The Govan club finished the group stage 32nd out of 36 teams, with just four points, but Rohl highlighted the positives.

“After 20 minutes, I felt we were on the right track. But then 1-1 happens—against strong teams, one moment too late can cost you. I was disappointed with the 2-1, conceded too easily from a 40-metre ball into the box, and the 3-1 was an unfortunate own goal from a set-piece,” Rohl said.

“In general, we faced a strong, experienced side with great individual quality and excellent coaching. But compared to the Bergen game, I see a massive step forward. It’s not perfect yet, and we must continue improving, especially in European competitions.

“What makes me proud is seeing us go to Porto, play on the front foot, attempt possession play, and execute counter-pressing. This shows our development in Europe, which we can continue to build on.

“I’ve told my players I won’t dwell on this game. My focus is now fully on the league. We have a mission, a plan, and we need all our energy directed there.”

Like their Scottish rivals, manager Rohl has been transparent about the need for reinforcements this month, as Rangers chase league leaders Hearts.

Bid for Rwanda International Falls Short
According to Belgian reports via Sport Witness, Rangers submitted a bid of under €1 million for Standard Liège midfielder Hakim Sahabo, who can operate in the six, eight, or ten roles.

Liège are reportedly unhappy with the offer and are leaning towards a €1.5 million deal from AEK Athens instead.

The 20-year-old, born in Belgium but representing Rwanda internationally, is out of contract this summer, though Liège are exercising a one-year extension to ensure they can secure a transfer fee this month.

Whether Rohl and Rangers will return with an improved offer remains to be seen.
