Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil has joined Ipswich Town on loan for the remainder of the season, marking the end of his 18-year association with the Black Cats.

Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris has expressed his admiration for Neil’s contributions, both on and off the pitch, as the midfielder moves into the next stage of his career.

During his time at Sunderland, Neil made 201 senior appearances and played a key role in securing two promotions.

Le Bris highlighted the midfielder’s importance last season and praised the way he supported a largely new squad this year, even with limited game time.

“I have immense respect for Dan, both as a player and as a person,” Le Bris said. “Last season, our connection was perfect. He led the team brilliantly as captain, managing the squad’s unity alongside Luke.

Those two were instrumental in creating togetherness. Now, he’s moving into a new chapter of his professional life, and he leaves with respect and good memories.”

Le Bris added that he and Neil had kept in touch via text after his departure, reflecting on their shared journey. Despite Neil not featuring regularly this season, the manager said he would have been happy for him to stay until the end of his contract.

“As a manager, you have to handle these situations respectfully and directly. Dan understood the situation—he knew he wouldn’t be captain this season with Granit taking the role—and he fought until the end,” Le Bris explained. “When you enter the final year of a contract, with competition at this level, decisions have to be made. Dan chose to leave to get more game time and remain at the heart of a team, which we fully respect.”

Le Bris emphasized that Neil’s leadership remained a crucial part of Sunderland’s culture. “Even though he didn’t play much this season, he stayed connected and helped others grow, paving the way for the next generation,” he said. “His influence extended beyond the pitch, helping the squad settle in the league. That’s a significant part of his legacy here.”
